Teaching Lincoln: Faces of War Lesson Plan

February 2010 ended a nearly year and a half long commemoration of Abraham Lincoln’s 200th birthday.  During this period, students and teachers around the country sought new ways to explore the 16th President.  One such teacher, Janet Johnson, a sixth grade teacher at Pine Street Elementary School in Wayland, Michigan developed a writing lesson in which students studied period photographs and life masks of Lincoln’s iconic face to better understand how the Civil War personally affected the president.  For a full lesson plan and samples of student work, please follow the links below.
