Despite the rain, Family Day 2014 was a huge success and drew its biggest crowd to date! President Lincoln’s Cottage, the Armed Forces Retirement Home and No Greater Sacrifice, a nonprofit organization dedicated to the children of our nation’s fallen and wounded Service members by delivering scholarships and resources to improve their quality of life, welcomed over 900 visitors to the grounds for an array of family programs and activities.
A quintet from the Army Band kicked off the morning with a medley of patriotic songs.
Throughout the day, the Bucktail re-enactors engaged visitors in firing drills, history lessons, dress-making, and Civil War camp life.
Visitors participated in storytelling, played lawn games, made stove-pipe hates, and decorated cards for veterans.
As always, the petting zoo was a huge hit, and at times, the line for pony rides extended down the walkway!
