Can you describe what President Abraham Lincoln or George Washington looked like? How about President Grover Cleveland or Calvin Coolidge? In the new children’s book What Does the President Look Like?, author and Presidential historian Jane Hampton Cook analyzes how young people have viewed the President since the founding of our country. Through paintings, photographs, television or the internet, the image of the President has changed over time and the access to that image has revolutionized how we view Presidents. Looking at newspaper portraits, political cartoons or campaign signs, the image of the President can be very powerful, influential and persuasive. From President George Washington to President Barack Obama, Mrs. Cook examines how technology has shaped our perception of the President and how it has helped us gain quicker access to the image of the President.
President Lincoln’s Cottage is proud to announce that Mrs. Cook will join us for our first ever book reading event. The event will take place on Saturday, June 25, 2011 at 3:30pm in the Robert H. Smith Visitor Education Center. Mrs. Cook will be here to sign copies of her brand-new book between 2:00pm and 4:30pm and will read What Does the President Look Like? at 3:30pm. The evolution of the Presidential image and the ever changing technology that has advanced those images will be examined by children of all ages as Mrs. Cook explains what the President has looked like throughout our nation’s history. Our inaugural book reading will be fun for the whole family as kids will explore Presidential history in a new and interesting way. A special raffle will take place after the reading and all participates will receive 10% off their museum store purchases on the day of the event.
