Cast Iron Staircase Preservation

Our Senior Preservationist Jeff Larry is in the midst of preservation work on the cast iron stairs on the Cottage’s veranda. See our Instagram post written by Jeff explaining the work being done as well as a brief history of the staircase.

Our Senior Preservationist Jeff Larry has been working on the Cottage’s cast iron stairs. Check out his explanation of the work as well as a brief history of the stairs: “The original cast iron staircase at President Lincoln’s Cottage was removed when the verandah was enlarged in the late 1800’s. A reproduction staircase was installed during the exterior restoration in 2005. The design was based on photographs from the 1860’s and the railing on the adjacent cast iron balcony. The entire staircase will get an overhaul in 2018 so for now I’m just going to address the surface rust on the treads & risers and try some different products to compare how they hold up.” #historicpreservation #restoration #lincolnscottage #oldbuildings #metalwork #castiron
