An Extra Special Homecoming on September 21

Washington, D.C. – On September 21, President Lincoln’s Cottage will hold its annual Homecoming festivities honoring Tad Lincoln and the Cottage’s role as a family home. Today, the Cottage is preserved as a historic site, but it was once a home where the Lincolns, especially Tad, delighted in the company of family, neighbors, and a whole host of animals (including two pet goats, Nanny and Nanko).

The day will not include an early-morning race portion as it has in years past. Instead, it will begin at 10am with a focus on welcoming children of all ages and their families. Tad would recognize some of his favorite Cottage activities- pony rides, animals (there will be a petting zoo), playing games on the lawn (we will have his favorite, checkers), and listening to stories (read by CEO & Executive Director, Callie Hawkins). Tickets are complimentary, and all are welcome.

There will be hat-making and other crafts, exercise classes, as well as hands-on preservation activities. The United States Patent and Trademark Office will be leading an activity in honor of Lincoln’s inventiveness (he is the only president to hold a patent).

In addition, this year there will be a strong musical component. Kidsinger Jim Puppet Show will be performing, and kid-favorite Rocknoceros will be rocking through the day. Moreover, there will be family Zumba to improve everyone’s dance moves.

All of these activities are part of an effort to nourish the whole child and foster a sense of belonging among members of our community. This is in accordance with the Cottage’s initiative to celebrate visitors of all ages and experiences as we approach America’s 250th birthday in 2026.

“We can’t wait to welcome our friends and neighbors to President Lincoln’s Cottage, and to share in the joy that riding ponies, petting goats, dancing, and unleashing creativity can bring,” said Hawkins.

Our regular guided tours of the Cottage will occur throughout today with a final tour at 2 pm. The festivities will wrap up at 3 pm, but President Lincoln’s Cottage is open 362 days a year.
