In July of 1864 Confederates attacked Fort Stevens in an attempt to take the capital. Lincoln, who was living at the Soldier’s Home just two miles away, visited the battle and became the only president in American history to come under enemy fire. Meanwhile, he faced yet another battle as he fought for re-election.
Join us for an evening of conversation with speakers from a variety of backgrounds as they discuss this pivitol battle and its effect on the election of 1864. Lincoln invited allies and adversaries to the Cottage to engage in thoughtful discussions. In that spirit, you will be invited to participate in breakout sessions.
