Wednesdays in May: Offered at 10am and 3pm

Bring your young learner to President Lincoln’s Cottage to nurture social and emotional skills through interactive storytelling, hands-on activities, and reflection. Join us for one session or for the whole month!

The program was developed for ages 2-8, but children of all ages are welcome to participate. Adults do not need to purchase additional tickets.

Each program begins with a book reading and ends with a hands-on activity!

MAYBE (May 17, offered 10 AM and 3 PM)

While living at the Soldiers’ Home, Lincoln made nation-changing decisions, most notably the Emancipation Proclamation. While here, President Lincoln persisted despite moments of self-doubt and a fear that he might fail. He overcame his struggles because a united country and freedom for all was a dream worth fulfilling.

Children and their grown-ups join President Lincoln’s Cottage in an exploration of their dreams while learning that they have the potential to make them come true.

In this program, participants will…

  • Enjoy a group reading of Maybe: A Story About the Endless Potential in All of Us by New York Times Best Selling Author Kobi Yamada and illustrated by Gabriella Barouch
  • Create a meaningful keepsake to store your hopes and dreams

TINY, PERFECT THINGS (May 24, offered 10 AM and 3 PM)

While living at the Cottage, Abraham Lincoln wondered about the future of the country. He observed, questioned, and shifted his perspective in search of new information. By demonstrating a deeper curiosity about himself, others, and the world, Lincoln was able to act bravely.

Children and their grown-ups join President Lincoln’s Cottage to develop their own curiosity and discover how tiny, perfect things can make a big impact on new ideas.

In this program, participants will…

  • Enjoy a group reading of Tiny, Perfect Things by author M.H. Clark and illustrated by Madeline Kloepper
  • Go on an interactive adventure of the Cottage’s gardens and make a craft that shows how new ideas, like tiny seeds, can make the world a brighter, more colorful place

WHAT CAN A CITIZEN DO? (May 31, offered 10 AM and 3 PM)

While living at the Soldiers’ Home, Lincoln made nation-changing decisions about the country and freedom, most notably the Emancipation Proclamation. He observed, questioned, and shifted his perspective in search of how to best support his community and the nation. Lincoln and many others cared and worked together to build a strong community and a united country.

Children and their grown-ups join President Lincoln’s Cottage to explore the importance of everyone within their own community.

In this program, participants will…

  • Enjoy a group reading of “What Can A Citizen Do?” by Dave Eggers with art by Shawn Harris-Write
  • Decorate a “thank you” note to helpers in their community
