One popular myth has it that Lincoln as Lincoln lay dying at the Peterson house, he turned to his friend Abner Doubleday and used his last death rattle to utter the command, “don’t let baseball die.” While that story is untrue (and ridiculous), it is true that Lincoln was fond of the sport and found it a needed break from the burdens of a wartime presidency.
