Well Ladies and Gentlemen, it’s come down to this. The final of the third annual Cottage Madness Bracket. This year we’re determining the best Facial Hair of the Civil War, and we have a doozy in the championship round. Top seed Ambrose Burnside continues to dominate the competition. He felled strong challenger Edwin Stanton in the semifinals. Meanwhile, on the bottom half of the bracket, Ulysses S. Grant keeps “upsetting” higher seeds, most recently beating two seed Gideon Welles by about seven percent.

The semifinal sure wasn’t friendly to Lincoln’s cabinet members. Secretary Welles certainly put up a stronger fight than his Secretary of War counterpart, admittedly as the higher seed. His bushy white beard was no match for the future 18th president. Grant’s stately looks just were too handsome for Father Neptune. Now Grant faces his toughest challenge yet: Number 1 overall seed Ambrose Burnside. To the best beard goes the spoils!
