On Thursday, April 20th, join us as author Jonathan White and Michael Bishop of the George Washington University’s National Churchill Library, discuss White’s book, Midnight in America: Darkness, Sleep, and Dreams During the Civil War.
Dr. Jonathan White is an associate professor of American Studies and a senior fellow with the Center for American Studies at Christopher Newport University. He is the author or editor of eight books and more than seventy-five articles, essays and reviews. He serves on the boards of several organizations dedicated to the study of Abraham Lincoln and the Civil War, as well as the Ford’s Theatre Advisory Council. His recent book, Emancipation, the Union Army, and the Reelection of Abraham Lincoln, was selected by Civil War Monitor as one of the best books of 2014, was a Finalist both for the Lincoln Prize and the Jefferson Davis Prize, and won the Abraham Lincoln Institute’s 2015 Book Prize. His newest book, Midnight in America: Darkness, Sleep, and Dreams during the Civil War was published by the University of North Carolina Press in March 2017.
Mr. Michael F. Bishop is director of the National Churchill Library and Center at the George Washington University and executive director of the International Churchill Society.
Trained as an historian, Mr. Bishop has spent most of his career in politics, serving in several positions on Capitol Hill and later in the White House during the administration of George W. Bush. More recently, Mr. Bishop served as corporate communications manager at Strategic Investment Group, a leading provider of outsourced chief investment office services.
He is the former executive director of the congressional Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Commission, and served as a consultant on Lincoln, the Steven Spielberg film. In 2011, Mr. Bishop curated The Tsar and the President: Alexander II and Abraham Lincoln, an exhibition that opened at the Russian State Archive in Moscow and traveled to Tsarskoye Selo in St. Petersburg.
His reviews and articles on Churchill, Lincoln, World War I, and British and Irish politics and history appear regularly in The Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, National Review, The Daily Beast, and elsewhere. Mr. Bishop was educated at the University of California at Berkeley, the George Washington University, and Georgetown University.
