It’s autumn in Washington, a time when the Lincolns would have been planning to pack the carts for their return to the White House. 
The chill morning air reminds us of the importance and function of the fireplaces throughout President Lincoln’s Cottage; the granite buildings dotting the Soldiers’ Home present lengthened shadows much earlier in the day, and leaves are falling quickly, revealing the stunning views of our nation’s Capitol city. These views of the city center gave the Lincolns a distinct connection to the workings of the city, while giving them a separation allowing for reflection and a change of perspective.
