“News Plus” Correspondent Robin Hamilton covered the unveiling of the Emancipation Proclamation at President Lincoln’s Cottage on September 22, 2012. Here’s what she had to say:
The movie Lincoln captures the struggles the 16th President faced as the Civil War raged on, tearing apart the United States. The moral dilemma over slavery weighed heavily on Abraham Lincoln, and led him to writing the Emancipation Proclamation, which ultimately led to the beginning of the end of slavery.
Several weeks ago while on assignment, I had the chance to visit Lincoln’s cottage in downtown Washington. It was an escape where he gathered his thoughts, and reflected on the burdens weighing on the country at the time. It was at that very place where he drafted the Emancipation Proclamation.
While at the cottage, I had the fortune of viewing (up close) one of the original, signed drafts of that monumental piece of history. It was an executive order that changed history, and redirected the course of this nation.
