Throughout his life, and particularly in the years of his presidency, Abraham Lincoln often turned to Shakespeare’s plays, not only for the pleasure he took in the poet’s language, but for relief from the cares of state and for solace when faced with personal disappointment. He loved reading Shakespeare aloud to all and sundry and often attended the theater to watch and listen to some of the great actors of his time. His well known letter to the actor James H. Hackett, where he provides the only written account of his interest in Shakespeare, encourages an investigation of the question: “just who or what was the Shakespeare Lincoln knew, and how did Lincoln know him?”
Join President Lincoln’s Cottage for a dramatic look at Lincoln’s Shakespeare on June 3, 2010 from 6:30pm – 8:00pm.
Michael Anderegg, Shakespeare in film scholar, and Audra Polk, graduate of the Shakespeare Theatre Company Academy for Classical Acting at George Washington University, will be presenting during this theatrical evening.
Bring a blanket and picnic, admission is FREE. Lawn chairs are permitted, alcohol is prohibited. Ample free parking is available on site.
