President Lincoln’s Cottage wins VSA Preservation Award
President Lincoln’s Cottage, a National Trust Historic site located in Washington, D.C., received the Victorian Society in America’s prestigious Preservation Award for the restoration of President Lincoln’s Cottage and its surrounding grounds. The award, officially presented yesterday morning during a ceremony at President Lincoln’s Cottage, honors the quality of the restoration and the attention to historical detail throughout the Cottage. In addition, the award praises the interactive and interpretative exhibits in the LEED-Gold Certified Robert H. Smith Visitor Education Center, an adaptive reuse of the former administrative offices of the Armed Forces Retirement Home.
The ceremony included the presentation of the award from Charles Robertson III, a Vice president of the Victorian Society in America and Chair of its Preservation Committee, to Frank Milligan, Director of President Lincoln’s Cottage, and was followed by a tour of the Cottage and grounds.
Charles Robertson III, vice president of the Victorian Society in America and Chair of its Preservation Committee, noted that the VSA was “impressed by the research, planning and high standards of the restoration work, which required the services of skilled architects and contractors, as well as many specialized craftsmen..”
“This award underscores one of our key goals for this restoration, which was to ensure that we were as historically accurate and faithful to Lincoln’s era as possible,” said Frank Milligan, Director of President Lincoln’s Cottage. “It not only allows future generations to see the Cottage and grounds from Lincoln’s perspective, but also to gain a better understanding of a place where important decisions that still impact our lives today were made.”
